Carved Scottish Powder Horn

I just posted a slide show of a carved Scottish powder horn I recently finished on Utube...turn down the volume if you hate the skirilin' o' the pipes...

Great little horn and very nicely done. I really like the shading you did, something I have trouble with.
Bagpipes were great just not enough.

Thanks all for the kind words....they are much appreciated...
The end plate is hammered pewter salvaged from an old platter, it covers a standard wooden fitted plug. The plugged end of the horn was sanded dead flat, the pewter plate fitted up,
glued down, and filed flush to the edges of the horn. Then pin holes were drilled with a super fine wire bit....and straight pins, the type used for sewing, were cut to length and used as nails...the strap stud hole was then drilled and the stud screwed in...the Motto "Slainte Mhor Agad" was cut into the pewter.
Thats about it for the fabrication of the end plate...

Beautiful horn, T.C.!  Excellent choice of background music as well.  ("Loch Lomond" is very evocative and has an fascinating "back story.")

That is a nice horn. I finally got to look at it last night. It looks really good. I have always liked the Scottish styled art. I liked the front end hole for attaching the horn.

 As much as I like the horn just the way it is, I would also like it even without the beautiful decoration. The size and shape and architecture and flatness are just perfect, the eye is captured even before one starts looking at the decoration. Do you use the oil bath method for flattening?
 A great piece.

I bought this one already flattened but still rather rough and un-drilled. Picked it up at the CLA show last August just for this project...however, I did make sure that softening was done with boiling water or steam only ...True or not, I have heard hot oil will make it harder for any carving to show well and I really didn't want to risk it. Thanks again for all the good comments....
