Reshaping a cheekpiece
« on: March 03, 2009, 12:58:57 AM »
Has anyone ever tried reshaping the cheekpiece from the rounded oversize GPR cheekpiece to a smaller squared off cheekpiece that you can see on some original Hawkens?  If so, how hard was it and how did it turn out?

I've not done a GPR but here is a CVA Mt Rifle I reworked.

Thanks...that is exactly what I had in mind.  I already got rid of the perch belly, reshaped the lock and side plates, and rounded out the forestock.  This should do it and then it is sanding time.  I might do an inlay too....I think I have hunters star laying around.

His bench is too clean.  Maybe we should all send him a box of chips and dust.  ;D

Bob,
I would put a radius on both ends. I would stop your horizontal line about 3/4" or so from the end and make a sweeping radius up towards the heel. At the wrist I would make that a radius also without a step.
If you don't understand what I mean I have a stock I can draw lines on and post pics.

Just a thought, but your drawing looks to be a little far back on the stock to properly place your cheek. Have you checked to see where your cheek rests on the existing cheekpiece?

I would make sure the new cheekpiece is in the correct location before removing any wood.

Just kinda thinkn'...typn' out loud, so to speak..type.
