Makers Mark In View On Barrel?
« on: July 08, 2015, 08:54:42 PM »
Hello again. I've been gone a few years living through some of life's distractions.

Recently I 've had occasion to take a look at my spare parts shelf And a thought crossed my mind. I have an unbreeched, in the white 50 cal barrel by a notable maker, long since departed. I have everything I need to construct the intended gun and I was looking at the barrel and blank to determine the barrel orientation etc, and I thought, "why not display the mark on the left oblique flat rather than relegate it to the bottom, unseen flat?"

Any of you done this?

I don't think the quality of my work or the association with my unheard of builders name would harm his good name too badly.

Just thinkin...

It's yours to do with as you please. However, peer pressure is powerful stuff and can result in what is commonly known as herd mentality.

As long as the mark doesn't indicate runout like the Douglas barrels, it is a matter of personal preference.  Your gun=your preference!!  Installing the breech plug might make the decision for you.

It would be nicer to see your name on the top flat.

I'd like to see it there. Would not like to see additional info like caliber and twist which is sometimes scratched onto the bottom flat by some barrel makers. In those cases is leave that useful info on the bottom.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

This barrel mark is the makers initials and name, without any caliber, twist or runout info. Yeah, I'll probably put mine on there somewhere too.

FWIW, I'm leaning towards leaving it exposed. Sort of my silent tribute to an icon.

And Keb, thanks for the reminder about herd mentality. I experienced the negative side of that kind of thinking once or twice. Funny thing... always been kind of an independent cuss. Just like that long gone barrel maker.  ;)
