Here is a picture of the side latching box on my Miller Deep River rifle.  It latches on the bottom and opens upward.   Another option to consider.

Even if the lid was quite snug, it still shouldn't "wear" anywhere except on the "panel" on the side of the stock where the box lid sits.  The rest of the stock curves down away from it, and the lid should never touch it.  I presume that the latch rides on the buttplate sufficiently to keep it from rubbing wood.
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."

I used a bronze shim at the pivot point. I think it was .012 thick. It is the shim that is used by the super duper knife makers for the liner locks etc. Worked great.

Here's a web site I found with some information.
http://www.northcarolinalongrifles.com/longrifles.html

Seems it was in Guilford county.

I am resurrecting this thread to ask about the shims under the lid.Is only one shim or two used to provide a free moving pivot point?

I did not use any shims.  The woodscrew had an area of no threads so I tightened it only to that point.  The rifle I was building tapered sharply to the toe.  So when the spring was compressed it slid right down.

I am going to try the single Shim to overcome humidity issues(wide variation).

Whitebear,
Exactly my thoughts.
Although, I really do like the patch box.
I am surprised that it was only related to one location and time :-\
By the way that is a fine looking rifle! We DO NEED more pictures!
