ALR Musuem Exhibit: A superior Massachusetts 18th C. Fowler
« on: March 09, 2009, 05:35:21 PM »
We are please to exhibit our first Massachusetts gun. It is attributed to John Mason, master gunsmith to whom Silas Allen apprenticed. This gun is currently cracked at the wrist but otherwise is original.

That's a real dandy.  Love the long thimbles with the wedges located in the same place.  Very nice to see an original in this condition.  What's the gauge?

The owner reports that the bore is 1.3 centimeters in diameter. What does that translate to gauge?

.51 inches...close to a 28 gauge (.55 inches)

The trigger guard, butt plate and side plate are very nice. The color of the stock is also very pleasing.
Thanks for sharing.

Man, I just love this gun...I keep coming back to it all day!

Question, was this guard pinned vertically (like an inlay) vs horizontally in the front finial or is there another option for the hole there?

Is this barrel octagon to round, I can't quite make it out.  I see a skinny top flat and a flat for the bolster but can't make out if it is rounded between the flats or what is going on.

Maybe the owner would care to provide Nord some measurements for posting?  Barrel dimmensions (breach width, total length)  width of butt?

Thanks for posting

Steve
