Putting your name on the barrel
« on: March 12, 2009, 08:41:40 PM »
I'm finally finished with my 1st build. A 40 cal Schimmel flintlock. I'd like to put my name on the barrel. I'm no engraver, and I don't want to stamp it on. Is there another way of doing it?
I was thinking a carbide scribe might work but wanted to ask first.
Thanks. Ken

The first barrel I ever signed I engraved with a small hammer and a "sharpened" 3 cornered file.
This is on a "poor boy" made in 1968 early 69. Current owner sent me the pic sometime back. Unfortunately the rifle is not under my control.... But it does prove that people CAN learn to make nice guns no matter how crude the start.

Before you brown it, Clean it off real well and melt some bees wax and pour over the spot where  you want to put your name. Take a sharp scriber or needle and scribe your name thru the bees wax. Make it neat and nice. Then you can build a little dam around the area with some clay and put some nitric acid on it. about 10% will do it. Wait about 10 minutes and you will see it eating away. You can wash the acid off with water and inspect it. when it's deep enough quit.

Jerry, thanks for the tip.  I've tried to practice on a scrap of green mountain barrel, and they're much harder than Rice, or Getz barrels.  Guess I'm not hitting the graver hard enough.  The acid trick would be great.  I've done etch on glass(different acid), so now will try steel with the nitric.

Again thanks

Bill.

The nitric can be fairly dilute and if it seems a little slow acting sometimes a little water or hydrochloric acid will wake it up.
GM are made of barrel steel and it cuts harder than screw stock.
