« on: October 03, 2015, 02:02:14 AM »
I haven't seen a hunter star on anything other than a cheek piece.Would it be bad juju to to have it somewhere else?

I don't think "juju" belongs anywhere on a longrifle, and I have never seen a star, hunter or otherwise,  anyplace other than the cheek.   I am not sure where else it would fit.    Where did you want to put it?

I don't have my N C book with me. But I think one of the Vogler rifles has a hunters star behind the cheekpiece. Tim

Most of the Volger rifles I  have seen had a star behind the cheekpiece in place of carving.

I think if you check some Vogler rifles you will find the star in places besides behind the cheek piece...LP

I have an original mountain rifle made by J. Atkinson that has a five pointed star on the mortis area on the side opposite the lock.  It is not a hunter's star, but just a five pointed star.

It's your rifle, put a star where ever you'd like one. Just because it may not have been common in the past the whole point of a custom rifle is that it's the way you like it. Star, hearts, fish, wire inlay, brass tacks, what ever is beauty in the eye of the beholder. I've seen rifles with small stars at the barrel pins and thought they looked great. Be creative.

OK,this is what I'm thinking. While I'm still not sure about doing it I was thinking about incorporating one into the patchbox. After posting about patchboxes here on Hawken rifles and doing some of my own research it sure looks like they used Tryon supplied boxes like the one on the Medina rifle. This type or similar boxs can be found on at least three hawken rifles to my knowledge. Trying to a build a J&S hawken, mid 1830's so this box could be period correct. These boxes are used by others builders at the time also and it seems they all took a little creative licence and personalized them to a degree with slots, straight or not,key holes ect.So instead of the keyhole why not a hunters star?and maybe doing something different with the slots, trying to put a little distance between this box and the Medina.Mark the bad juju would be putting something where its not supposed to be and creating bad luck, thinking how superstition played into these rifles with luck pieces inlayed on many rifles back then. Not that I buy into this but sure would hate to put the hunters star on the wrong side and critters your after all start coming in on the back side making the shot more difficult,LOL
