How to satinize a too-glossy finish?
« on: October 16, 2015, 01:29:05 AM »
I built a rifle a Berks County style rifle earlier this year which I'm generally happy with, though I finished it with Renaissance wax after I was done. Renaissance wax is a great protective finish, but leaves a glaring shiny finish which shows every dimple and ripple in the wood. I'd like to kill the glossy finish a bit. I tried putting some rottenstone on it and rubbed it back a bit with a soft cloth with mineral oil, which may have knocked the shine down a bit, but not enough to suit me. Anyone have a fix to get a little more of a soft satin finish back?

Pumice is coarser than rottenstone so when I want to knock it back more that is what I use.  I know many use 4-0 steel wool but it is too aggressive for me.  I've always had problems using it.  Need a lesson!

Use a white scotch brite pad and elbow grease.  I apply oil till it glosses over and then rub it out per the previous. It is called  a hand rubbed finish.  ;)

Wax usually reflects the finish under it, so maybe you varnish is the problem. If so, I would knock it, the varnish, down with 4-O steel wool, use pumice to remove the steel wool marks and then apply the wax. It should reflect a softer sheen. good luck!!

I've used rottenstone - worked very well, giving a soft sheen.

The final finish I use doesn't have to be rubbed back...in fact, a rubbing w/ a fluffy towel is needed to produce some sheen......Fred

In my opinion the trick is in the application of the oil. If applied in a certain way it will not be glossy. Looks like Flehto has that figured out.
