Berks patch box catch

In process of making patch box catch not sure how much of the posts do you leave above the lid to peen down .Do you just hold it in a vice to do it or is there a better way

I hold the post in a vice on the bottom side of the lid and peen the top of the post into a slight counter sunk hole on the top of the lid, dress of the excess with a light touch.
