Little Banded Horn
« on: September 21, 2015, 01:38:28 AM »
I woke up early this morning and went out into the shop and built this little horn. It was one that I got in a box of horns from my favorite second hand store. They have the cores in them and are very dry and kind of bug eaten. This had some nice colors and a great twist. Tim Crosby has done some of these little banded horns and I like them. I figured to give this a try. I like how it came out.
The Walnut Butt is 1 and 7/8 in diameter. The horn is 9 inches around the outside curve. 10 inches assembled with the tip plug. A horn applied tip with a walnut plug.

Wonderful little horn.  This is why we make banded horns.

Nice little horn Steve, but sorry, there is something about that straight tip that I'm not to crazy about.

I already had two of the bands. Just had to scrape the horn and make the plug. Doesn't take all that long once I decide what I want it  to look like. That's the hard part.

Nice work, this is the first banded horn I've seen that I really liked.

Since this is back up...and once again nice horn but there are a couple of things I may have done different both dealing with the base. Instead of putting the horn over the base so you see the end of the plug, a band at the base to cover that would look nicer. Another option would have been to put the horn inside the base, you would see no portion of the base through the horn.

Tim
A couple things. If you look at the third picture, you'll see that the colors in the horn and the wood match up giving an interesting pattern. A band would have interrupted this. Also, I didn't have a band that fit in the right spot and was too lazy to make one.
The wall thickness of the horn is uneven and so would have been a pain to fit into a groove in the butt. I have used this on a number of screw tip horns where it was called for by school and I really like the effect. If I get my horn lathe done, I'll have a quick, easy way to turn the butt end of the horn. Just need to get motivated.
Thanks for your thoughts. I like  to get input.
