I swab between shots and I do not have problems. I can see powder at the edge of the touch hole. I think the thin patching is not sealing the bore and forcing powder out to the edge of the barrel. Since the patches are shredded and smoldering you need to go thicker anyhow. I typically do not pick at the charge.
