Belgium Back Action Shotgun
« on: December 10, 2015, 05:25:11 AM »
Good Day Gents,
I am in the middle of a tough restoration an a very beautiful belgium back action 20ga shotgun my grandfather found in the late 20's in St Clair Mi.

It has a beautiful set of chain rolled 48" damascus barrels and elegant full stag stock with german silver trim. Id like to find a near donor stock for the wrist barrel area.

Would anyone have or know a place I could purchase something like this that is a parts gun?

What type wood? I would guess European walnut? I have an old plain Belgium side by I want to fix for a shooter that has some wood missing above one lock. I found a chunk of English walnut that looks like it will work. Haven't got around to it yet. Try some of the wood worker supply houses if you just need patch material. Someone on classifieds here had some English walnut blanks for sale if you need to restock.

They weren't built like modern guns are today, Nothing will interchange. You will have to repair your stock or restock it by hand from a blank.

Yes it is European Walnut.  I understand the parts will most likely not fit, but i am missing the key portions around the rear barrel lugs, locks and trigger grouping. A donor would give me a form to study and also provide some excellent vintage wood for repair to the parts that are usable.

Thanks for the help gents.

If I understand your dilemma correctly, the stock is missing wood in the breech area and perhaps around the lock plates.  I am not a restorer per se, but that wouldn't stop me from fixing that stock.  Am I correct in my interpretation?

Taylor,
A photo would far better explain the situation. I will post a few shortly.  I have the wood from front forearm just slightly forward the breach and I have the rear portion of the stock from the rear wrist back to the butt plate. I dont have any wood for a pattern from the lock/breech area of the gun.
I'm looking for another belguim stock I can look at for desgin/styling (If I chose to remake) or possibly being able to fit the hardware too (An extreme long shot).

I would like to utilize the wood I have because it has some very ornate carving.

Photos to come

I have a 19th C muzzle loading belgium-made double that is in pretty good shape except for the barrels. Its not fancy but it sure carries nicely and I wish the barrels were good enough to shoot. The locks are fully functional and work great, the stock is nice too--- only has one tiny patch on the edge of one side of the forearm. I doubt she is worth fixing, but fun to handle. email me and I can send you pics.
