Siler lock??
« on: March 17, 2009, 05:28:42 PM »
I need some help on the I.D. of a lock, its on a Tip Curtis left hand percussion. The owner sent me some pictures and from what I can tell it looks like a large Siler percussion. Stamped on the back are the letters LS in a square and the letters HH also in a square. The owner wants to convert it to flint. Any inputs --- Thanks in advance - Paul.
Also any suggestions as to the conversion to flint?? The rifle has a drum installed :-\.

Give Tip a call at 615-654-4445 and he can confirm the lock and maker.

I recently converted a perc to flint pretty easily--it depends on the lock.  In my case I just replaced the drum with a vent liner that screwed right in and fit a lock that was the flint companion to the perc lock [some are made identical as to plate/innards etc]...it took a little fitting of the lock to tighten against the barrel, etc.   Now, I have another rifle I wanted to convert from perc to flint and found that the particular lock I had used was not compatible with its sister flintlock...I left it percussion.

Yes, I believe your lock is a Siler lock.  The "LS" stands for Locks & Stuff, Inc. which was a lock assembly company owned by Herman Stone.  Homer assembled a bunch of locks over the years.  You should be able to convert to flint fairly easy since the Siler percussion and flint plates are exactly the same size and shape.

Thanks all, I feel better knowing that the lock is a Siler. I hate to get someone's hopes up only to burst their bubble :-[ -- I can now give them the 95% "go-ahead" ;)!!
