Anyone trying a build with the new L and R mule ear ?
« on: January 06, 2016, 01:52:43 AM »
Hi All,
Anyone try this lock out on a build yet ? I've seen this advertised the last couple of months in Muzzleblasts but havent seen it on the L and R website .
Just curious .

Mule ear locks have always be a favorite of mine. Some target shooters claim these are superquick like the forbidden to discuss Underh--mer.
Regards,
Stuart

I see that it is on their website now, although the price list hasn't been updated for a couple of years.
I would like to try one out as I like the strange and unusual side of muzzleloaders.

I just received a 40 cal from Mike Davis with the L&R mule ear and it works absolutely fine.  I probably will need to make a flash guard for it, as the cap flash hits the lock area of the stock a little more than a conventional lock.  I can see it on a big chunk gun for certain.  It is supposed to interchange with the Durs Egg, but I think you would need to modify the inlet of the internals.

I built a rifle to use in Table Matches with one and so far so good. I had to add a piece to the inside of the lock plate to move the lock out a bit from the barrel to get a square hit on the nipple. Also placed a brass shim under the main spring that helped get a little more down pressure when the hammer hits the nipple.

It does blow more stuff out over the barrel and even had some fouling blow between the barrel and lock down into the lock mortise. After the first time out I now smear some black powder bullet lube around here and there and helps a bunch. Ignition seems very fast and positive. I have thought about making some kind of flash guard for it but for now the lube is working. I like usual rifles and pistols too. The first time that I had it at the range a couple of guys saw it and ordered mule ears locks too.

I'm not surprised at your newly received piece of ordnance, Roger - well done.

I wonder, when dry firing it, can you see any gun movement at all, as in jarring of the sights when the cock strikes the nipple?  Perhaps a scope may be required?
