vent pick advise please
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:26:44 AM »
I am going to build a southern rifle. I have put brass vent pick inlays on my rifles and want to have a gun mounted pick in this one. I think something else would be called for. Ideas?
                                                                Thanks,Rich

I'd use steel, or maybe more authentic would be a hole for a feather in rear of cheekpiece or in the toe area.

I have used 2 small iron staples set just under the cheek-piece to hold a feather.

Just a couple plain iron staples driven in under cheek piece to hold clipped feather or a wire pick. Or hole drilled for a feather. I am very fond of feathers for clearing vents. They work about like a pipe cleaner, they are PC, won't damage the vent, and are free. (Doves leave them under the bird feeder for me).

Not sure if these pictures will help you turtle but they are the same general type rifles your talking about. The pins holding the pick are made from 1/16" diameter rod, filed flat to 1/32", bent around a piece, the diameter of the pick,  soldered and the hole reamed clean. I pilot drill the holes in the stock, rough up the shank of the pins with a sharp chisel and tap them in, I put the pick through the pin hole while tapping to prevent the hole from deforming.

I am fond of the feather and a hole.  During hunting season when I leave the gun loaded, a quill stays in the vent so long as there is a charge in the bbl and it can't do much damage to the vent or the cover or pan.

The forest is littered with feathers.

I like the feather idea and would like to add one to my gun.  Anyone have pictures of the feather in its hole??

Thanks,

Dave

Be careful of what kind of feather you use. It seems that most species have some kind of protection and possessing their parts is against federal law, and from what I have heard, they seem to enjoy enforcing this particularly onerous statute. Not starting anything, its just the way things are.
