Emphasizing moldings
« on: January 20, 2016, 07:05:58 PM »
I am nearly ready to start finishing the stock on my latest effort.  Even though I bought Jim Kibler's stock carving kit, I have decided not to attempt carving this one.  Everything has gone very well on it to this point and I am afraid to attempt much that may spoil it.  Having said that, my moldings along the forend aligned with every barrel key and ramrod pipe pin (a feat I had previously thought must involve  black magic) and I would like to emphasize this and the lower butt molding.  I have some of Jim Chambers black walnut filler, some Laurel Mountain nut brown and cherry stains.  The stock is a very nicely figured sugar maple which I intend to stain with ferric nitrate.

Thanks,

frog

Sometimes a little relief on one side of the line makes it stand out a LOT.

Acer, is that a scraper?  I have a piece of spring stock about that size that would make one.  Is the cutting end bent to 90 degrees, or just rolled over with a burnisher?
