Need hawken half stock for 13/16" barrle
« on: January 09, 2016, 06:43:37 AM »
After about 200 hours of work on a rifle for my teenage son's birthday, the brad point drill for the ramrod went out the side about 2" from the lock.

So now I need a pre-carved if I have any chance of getting it done in time.
Any idea who I should call?

Dave Keck at Knob Mountain muzzleloaders or Pecatonica River Longrifles, probably have to be special
 made.

Since the whole stock is proportional to the barrel, I don't think you're going to have much luck. Any that I know of, are cut for a 15/16th minimum. You might see if Pecatonica can help you out.
Are you sure you can't fix / camouflage your slip up ?

You might look at the Vincent style half stock they are built for 13/16 barrels they do have more drop that a Hawken but still make for a nice offhand rifle. I have several friends that have built rifles around them and they turned out nice. Just don't put the super pointy butt plate on them.

Any chance you can patch it?  Man, my heart goes out to you.  I'm a fairly inexperienced builder and I just completed a half-stock build for my 20 year old son's birthday and I'm now starting on one for my soon to be 18 year old's birthday.  I know what a labor of love it is and I'm really sorry to hear you're having issues so far into the build.  Good luck with whatever you do.  I've dealt with Dave Keck at Knob Mountain before and I agree that he could likely do something to help you out, but it may not be a Hawken style.

Greg;

  Sorry to hear of you mishap. I don't  know about the others on this forum, but I avoid a brad point type drill on my ramrod drill. I made my ramrod drill from a 3/8" twist drill, and a piece of 3/8" hot rolled steel rod welded together. The drill I reground so the cutting angle is minimal. The drill literally has almost no cutting angle at all, and draft behind the cutting edges is substantial, to eliminate drag, and friction. This drill doesn't track off when it encounters a grain change, or an internal knot. It does require constant pressure, since with this shallow cutting edge the drill doesn't want to self feed. It also must be pulled out more often and cleaned. I have drilled a lot of ramrod channels with this drill, and only had one bad experience, on a half stock fowler when the guide blocks slipped.

I've had a "Hawken" walnut precarve halfstock hanging around since 1978 when I bought it at Friendship.  The barrel channel is not fully cut nor is the ramrod hole drilled.  If interested let me know.  I'd send it for $20 plus shipping, returnable if you want to look at it.  It is nice and hard and has some figure in the buttstock, enough that there are tiny surface checks one sometimes sees in crotch wood, but nothing hard to finish.

Mark Weader at (717) 538-5370.  His machinery can cut a proportionally sized stock, that is, he can make a 7/8 scale stock.
I think he is backed up, but who knows.  Maybe you can get lucky.  Mark does wonderful work: the best.

Most any of the guys doing ML stock duplicating could use your  damaged stock as a pattern to make what you need.. Many of them would also drill the ramrod hole for you too
 Some of the ones mentioned do not have their own patterns and would not be free to use their other clients patterns to make a stock for you.

Just got a stock back from Mark, might be a couple months backed up but the wait wasn't bad.
