New How-to Build Manual
« on: February 21, 2016, 08:45:39 PM »
Thanks to everyone here recommending The Longrifle Construction Manual.
The new edition focuses on using kit stocks but has regular scratch build help too. I got it and am really amazed at all the stuff she covers. Saved my butt on some issues. Anybody else needing help thats startin out with pre-carves, then try it. Awesome stuff. She just got her new website www.historicalarmsmaker.com launched with her books. Hope she gets more done.
Thanks again for posting recomendations.

I would be interested but it's pricey at $40 + 7.50 shipping for a 200 page book. Is their any previews of the book anywhere?

I have had her Lancaster book on carving patterns for several years so dont know what the current price would be but it was reasonable when I bought it. I don't think $40 is that much in this day and age if the book is any good. You have a review of the book in the first post but if you want it I would call Suzie and talk to her about it.

Its pricey, but then again its not. I crapped out several parts on my first rifle and almost quit the kit. With some of the tips she has in her book, and also emailed questions, I was able to salvage and reuse them, and you can't tell.  Also messed up the inlet around the locks nose of a grade 7 pre-carve and she taught me how to fix it. My inletting was terrible, but the way she teaches, its like she shows you how to save your butt everytime you mess up and learn the tricks how to stop it. I figure all the tricks I've learned so far has saved me a couple hundred bucks. Makes it a bargain. Besides, when you think you don't need it anymore, you could always sell it. I got mine, then later the carving pattern book which is spectacular detail. I first got her heat treat book she made years ago when she had MBS. And she answers any question you got. She really likes teaching and helping.

Brownbear. I agree with alot of what you say. Is the book hard back? Either way I will probably shell out the money. I'm a book nut as well as longrifle nut.

I just got the last book she has to offer that has the engraving patterns that Dale Johnson from Tennessee drew up. I never saw so many patterns in one place before. The pages are packed so full there isn't any space left. I got one of his locks a long time ago that he engraved. Its also got lots of other pattern stuff in it too, if anybody is interested. All the tracings are are hand drawn or traced off originals, but its easy to see why he switched to making drawings. The real tracings don't reproduce as well.

I think Susie should make us a pattern book on lock engravings. Think I will email her and see about whether that might be on her radar. She's into authentic stuff so gettin her to do that would be awesome. Especially if it was done where it would work on todays locks.
