Building a gun style in which the school routinely anchored the tail of the trigger plate by undercutting.  In the past when I have tried this I wasn't satisfied with the appearance of the work.  Hopefully your experience will help.

I usually put about a 45 degree angle on the rear of the plate and inlet it first, gradually working forward. I did have one instance where I got a little careless and had to add a shim at the rear and re inlet, but it is under the guard so it really doesn't show. It is also very easy to go a little too deep which can throw you inlet off.

What Pete said. Be careful not to force it into the wood and have it chip out.

Inlet the forward 90% of trigger plate to depth, including the thicker lug at front.  File the undecut to rear of plate and stab a slight undercut into wood, about 3/32" short of length of plate.  Heat the rear tip hot, push to rear and up to burn in and seat the plate into its inlet.  Install tang screw - done.  Bob

The following is the trigger plate for my A. Verner rifle.  There is a bevel filed in the aft' ti9p that is inlet into a corresponding notch in the wood.  the tang screw through the front end holds the trigger plate firmly in its inlet, without the need for a screw in the other end.

The photos helped a lot.  Particularly how the end could be shaped.  Thanks for the assistance everyone.

Two plates, one out of the stock to show the end of the plate, the other installed.
