breechplug index question
« on: March 03, 2016, 11:04:31 PM »
I am fitting a lollypop breech plug in a Rice barrel. I have fitted several plugs and know about simultaneous contact of the  inside and outside. The initial spot where this occurred is just past proper, in other words I will have to go nearly a complete turn removing material from both places. This tang doesn't have that much thickness, particularly on the bottom. OK, here is my question; does the bottom (name stamped) flat of the barrel  have to be all the way on the bottom?
                                                                thanks,Turtle

It can be anywhere, but you probably don't want it to show.

Any one of the bottom three flats would suit me. The outside of Rice barrels is machined on center so no issue. BJH

Any of the bottom three flats works for me.

If the stamping ends up on top, file it off.  :o  (been there, done that)

I got the GM logo on a side flat on my current build. I didn't want to go another full round so I punched the letters closed with light taps on a nail set and filed what was left off, impossible to see.

Only problem with that is that sometimes barrel makers stamp their logo on the flat of the barrel that comes closest to the run out if the drilling is slightly off center. This means that the logo needs to be either on the bottom or the top or you may have difficulty getting sights aligned properly for windage.

Not so many barrels end up off center anymore. This goes back to when the blank was a rolled octagon, and the bore was drilled into it. Yes, the drill would drift some.

Most custom makers now drill and ream in the round, and mill the barrel concentric to the bore.

I think the barrel stamp goes wherever the plug happens to index to. :)
