Having fun
« on: March 21, 2009, 06:56:12 PM »
I just broke down and ordered my 25 Rayl barrel.  Scratched an itch.  Probably will set aside my current project for this one (I am trying to more or less copy and English rifle).  Something I haven't tried before and I may go another route of making the basics.  I have a 40 with a patched broken wrist I may cannibilize parts for or for kicks or may just make a simple gun and make the trigger guard, buttplate and thimbles.  Wish I had the time to cut my own stock for it, but have a store bought one.  Funny how that works.  Some of the people have a love of the artistic and engrave and carve.  I can carve but you would have to look long and hard to see where I have given any pointers on engraving (don't do it for carving either).  Just enjoy making one out of the basics.  Really admire Don Getz and his "barn guns" and may make my own version. I think he has fun too.

Well if you decide to cannabalize the .40 for parts let me know. I've had the same ideas about a.40 cal gun for a while. I might be interested in the barrel.

DP,  If you don't mind me asking, how long did Ed tell you the delivery would be?

Thanks,
Bill

I ordered the barrel from Stonewall Creek Outfitters.  They got in a shipment of several barrels recently.  I had called them about 2-3 weeks ago and got on their mailing list.  I got a pleasant surprise when they contacted me as they expected the shipment to be in April sometime.  Another company I have to put on Favorites and recommend.

I ordered a 25 Rayl a few months ago from Stonewall Creek and mine is being shipped on Monday!  Can't wait.

I hit the shipment at a good time and did not have the wait.  We are getting one from the same shipment.  More I think on it, this is going to be one where I buy the lock and barrel and use what I already have.  The store bought stock is about 15 to 20 years old, though I would prefer to cut one, its time I use it and cut some others to have on hand. The rest is going to be made.  Likely in a poor boy style.  Just need a trigger guard and thimbles and maybe a buttplate.  Can't buy .20  thimbles anyway.
