Finally finished the Generic Lancaster
« on: March 28, 2016, 11:49:22 PM »
You folks gave me some great pointers almost a year ago when I posted the initial photos of the raw rifle.  You also helped me sort out the non-drying finish issue only a short while ago.  My carving and engraving have not progressed to the point that I was willing to lay a carving knife or graver on this rifle, but here is what I did do.  Mark Weader inletted the barrel and ramrod and Rice provided the .32 caliber barrel.  Jim Chambers sent me the Dale Johnson lock.  The rest of the stuff came from either TOW or MBS.  Stock stain was ferric nitrate.  I had made a nice nickel silver moon for the cheek piece, but the stock was promising to be nice without additional ornamentation.

I don't plan to do any more on this one, unless my engraving improves logarithmically. but comments are welcomed, and will help on the next one.

Nicely done!  I would only add that now you need to upgrade the powder horn!   ;)

Several on here could provide that service I'm sure, (I guess myself included).  Or you could always build your own.  I've found that a nice rifle and a nice horn truly compliment one another.

Frogwalking... Sometimes simplicity is best, especially when you have such a beautiful piece of wood to work with.  Your inletting looks great, and I can find no gaps in those pics.  I have seen lots of rifles where the brass is way to thick, and you nailed it on this one... Nice an thin and graceful.  The finish looks like it should too.  A nice satiny shine.

Really nice clean lines and I'll bet it will shoot as good as it looks.  A gun to be proud of, Congrats!

Frog,
I like it REAL WELL...!!
You've got a gorgeous piece of wood and tastefully done brass. Nothing else is necessary and (IMHO) will detract from those things.
There's a place for clean, "generic" Lancasters...perhaps in my gun room if I find one in small caliber, LH.  ;D
Thanks for sharing.

Wow that is a rifle to be proud of. To my relatively un-educated eye it is rare that I see an embellished/engraved rifle that is as attractive as a well executed one that relies on nice wood and architecture to please.  Some of the most refined and universal art forms we Humans have developed rely on less then more.

Beautiful rifle. Real nice lines and the ferric nitrate finish looks great. It's my favorite finish now. Now go shoot her!

That's a gun you should be very proud of. Nice job.

...and it's more difficult to pull off a 'simple' gun than a fancier one. You done good!
