Patch box lid thickness

What guage or thickness for an iron box lid. I hammered out a piece of wrought as thin as I could and am filing it down for patchbox lid. I have most the hammer marks filed out on face side and have between about 12 to 14 gauge (slightly tapers). What do you think?

David,
12 to 14 gauge is more than thick enough for steel.  I would not hesitate to thin it down to 18 gauge (.050").

I use 16ga steel sheet for my iron/steel patchboxes.   That is more that thick enough.   I use 1/16" thick brass for a brass box.
