Inletting a thumb inlay on a Tulle
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:38:00 AM »
When inletting a thumb inlay on a Fusil de Chasse, should the metal be flush with the wrist or should it protrude a slight amount? Also, is the thumb inlay held in with brads? Any help would be appreciated.

If the inlay is flat it should be inletted flush but if its one of tghose 3 dimensional inlays it should be inletted only slightly, so it don't set on the wood or look like it is sunken into the wood.n It should be put secured with brads of the same material as the inlay....Ed

Ed, thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for. The inlay is Sterling silver so I will make brads with silver poured and filed heads.  :)

You can cut nails out of old silver coins. I pound them square and tapper them with a hammer which work hardens the silver so you can drive it into the stock.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Any  documentation for FDC's having a thumbpiece?? Fusil Fin , yes..
My research /opinion  might be different.
But the   Tulle FDC was a no frills hunting gun,of better quality than a trade gun,  Sometimes trimmed in brass as prices of the time reflected for both.

Just my thoughts on the matter, not to dissenchant any one................

Mike - Thanks for the idea. I do believe I'll try that. ;)

alexsnr - Thanks for the input. This one will not be going to any juried event. Only a personal choice for a hunting piece. :)
