Feric nitrate on hickory?

Will Feric nitrate work on straight grained hickory?

I am not sure  but  you may have to treat the wood with tannic acid first. I am only guessing here!!!

It will turn it a yellowy medium brown in my experience.

I would test it on a small sample first.  I tried it on ash , and it turned black.

Medium yellow-brown is my experience too.  It's a nice, mellow color.

I have tried it.  Like others said, light brown.

I did tannic acid and iron nitrate on mine...pretty much a red color..


Really couldn't get it into the grain or anything..the wood really didn't wanna absorb anything...

I believe this Boy Scout hatchet handle is hickory.  I stained it with ferric nitrate.
