Aqua Fortis?

I am approaching completion on a walnut Tennessee rifle.  The stock ha a dark color and a number of mineral stripes as well as a few light transverse stripes.  I finished my last walnut rifle using only Chamber's black walnut filler and clear finish.  It looks to this day a little too "new".  I am considering putting a mild Aqua Fortis wash and heat on it before the filler.  Do you folks think this may obscure the small amount of interest in this wood, or emphasize it?

This is a walnut stock that I stained with aqua fortis then rubbed back.

My one experience with AQ on walnut is it turned it very dark, almost black.  Of course, AQ does different things on different pieces of wood.

My experience also.  I tried it on a scrap from a powder horn plug.  Yup, almost as black as asphalt.  I'd try the Laurel Mountain Forge stains from Track.  They're alcohol based and can be thinned easily with denatured alcohol or with their thinner (reducer).  I'd also thin it a good bit, as I recall, they're very strong out of the bottle.

I also have some LMF nut brown, cherry and honey maple.  Perhaps a little diluted Nut brown may be in order?  What do ypu think.  I may have an extra piece of the walnut stock somewhere.  I shall look.

Frog,
What you might try is a wash of Fiberling Black Leather Dye. I tried it on AQ'ed curly maple and got horrible results with it twice (stripped it one and re-applied, never again for me) but I have talked two different people that said they used it on walnut with good results. I never tried it on Walnut.

Since it's walnut wood, why not put some birchwood casey walnut stain on it?

I think the wood would look better if it were darker.  I've always thought that black stocks look very nice on smr's.

Just for grins, I stained a walnut stock with walnut hull extract.  It seemed apropos.
