Removing acid stain?
« on: July 22, 2016, 06:03:56 AM »
If a stock is finished with aqua fortis or similar acid type "stain"....is it possible to "remove" and refinish???

I'm guessing scraping/sanding is the only way?

I have found that penetration into the stock can be pretty deep. On thin walled forends, I've had staining in the channel due to this. You may have to do a lot of scraping...which would really alter the stock.

Bleach damages the wood, and in a longrifle, I would not want to sacrifice strength, for beauty. I have found that you can lighten the lighter areas of an acid stained stock, but won't have much luck changing the dark areas.
