Very old project finally done
« on: May 30, 2021, 09:08:56 PM »
Some time ago David Rase started a thread of your dustiest project(over the back fence). I chimed in with Hawken build that on second thought was begun probably mid to late 70s. Well...I lost interest and life just basically got in the way. One day, after my last project, I happen to take note of that old partially inlet stock parked in the corner of my garage/shop. I said to myself...I need to finish that thing and here are the results. It may be more of a Hawkins rather than a Hawken but my humble efforts were pleasing if only to me.

OOOOH... very nice!  Very much what I dreamed of making some day... and still in the dreaming phase.  What lock is that?

The original lock I had repurposed on another project. This one I found at Friendship a couple or so years ago. It was rather rusty but had never been used. It cleaned up nicely.  Oh yes...Long's Lock Denver.

Real nice piece of wood used for that build.  If it shoots as good as it looks, it will be a keeper!

This is a particularly well done Hawken rifle!  Congratulations on finally getting it finished...now shoot it lots.

Your finish certainly did justice to that ‘70s fine stripe.
Kudos on completing an old time project

Great job Robbin, that's a good looking rifle. It appears to me you waited just the right amount of time!  ;D ;D

As much as I dislike plains rifles. I sure do like this one. Well done indeed. Thanks for showing such a nice well built gun.    Oldtravler

Thanks for all the kind remarks. I went a long time away from the hobby and finally took it back up again when I retired. Way back when, I was mentored by John Anderson over in Tullahoma, Tennessee. John could build a pretty mean Hawken. The stock pattern I used was actually his and I also had access to a completed plains rifle that he had built that helped me to get the "look" right.

First you have a Hawken there. Second it is very well made . Third that is a gorgeous piece of wood. Best of all you finished it.
