Suggestions for a Stock Carving pattern?
« on: February 13, 2009, 12:43:49 AM »
I have had this rifle finished to this stage since prior to winter.  I cannot arrive at a carving pattern that pleases me. It is my interpretation of ALR Christian Springs ideas with a Track of the Wolf feature in a past issue of an Isaac Haines using an uncapped schnabel forend.  It is a .62 smoothbore rifle.  Any ideas will be taken under consideration. I will only post one picture and put the rest in hyperlink to conserve space. Thanks in advance!

Nice job- idahjo - I'd likely finish quickly just to shoot it at this stage - but that's me. I like them plain, but they do look nice with some carving. This stock profile is probably the best American design - bit more drop than German - and fits very well indeed.  Nice!

Your smooth-rifle looks like the Edw. Marshall piece. Have you ruled out the works of Andreas Albrecht, Christian Oerter and Jacob Dickert? All worked in CS and there are many similarities in their carving and theme. I think of Haines as more in the Golden Age period around Lancaster. You can apply a simple large volute behind the cheek or a fullblown European scheme ala contemporary David Price, depends on your ability.
Have fun with it!

Have you seen anything that looked close to what you want to have ? Perhaps a bit of drawing onto the stock could help confirm your ideas w/o a commitment to a cut in to stock pattern. It almost seems like you have "builders block" somewhat like a writer gets. If you do not want to draw on the stock at this stage could you do a practice run on a piece of scrap just to get the "juices" flowing?

Just some thoughts...I have the parts for a Chamber's Lancaster that I am trying to visualize before I start in and find I am somewhat stuck like you are...it also does not help I am finishing a new build shop and the power to my current shop is stopped due to the wonderful@$%$#%$%@ ice we seem to be having during this mid winter melt down, but that is another story ;)

Thanks guys for the responses.

Tom, you are 'spot-on'; it was originally laid out to be a Marshall with my personal butt drop.  Then I decided it was 'klunky' and I did not care for the carving pattern of the original.  (No beef with those who do) I was much more taken by the schnabel on the rifle in the Track catalog,  so something was created that maybe crossed PC lines?  Nothing has been ruled out and I have been through my ALR books repeatedly but nothing has 'grabbed' me..

Rick, In my poorly educated (in the various 'schools') mind, it looks like a lot of things.  I ruled out Jaeger's with the Marshall as the beefy look was not what I was after.  "Builders block" is what it IS!  I am not afraid to draw on the stock, just don't know what to draw!  The Antes I built had symmetrical carvings, so I penciled in an asymmetrical pattern on the entry pipe area that I thought was OK; but, don't know about carrying it through to the breech, comb and buttstock.
If I don't get any ideas thrown at me that 'stick', I will just wing it one of these days1

BTW; North Idaho got hammered early-on this winter.  Still colder than the dickens, just that the heavy snow has apparently pooped itself out early.  GLOBAL WARMING, you know! :D

Idahjo, I think your rifle "in the white" looks great. As Tom Caster mentioned any of the work from the Edward Marshall rifle through to Oerter, Dickert, and the one signed riflle by Albrecht with a main C scroll behind the cheekpiece would almost be expected on a Christaian Springs rifle. As an alternative, 2 rifles attributed to Albrecht that are illustrated in Longrifle Articles vol 1 by Shumway, have different carving than the C scroll and include a little wire inlay as carried on by Oerter. Just an idea. Another rifle that provides " early" inspiration for me is Eric Kettenburg's 1750 rifle on his website. Food for thought.

Thanks Tom, the only Albrecht I have as I recall is in ALR(partial remains?).  Will check out Kettenburg's rifle.
Thanks for the help.
