So near but still too far
« on: March 31, 2009, 03:04:18 AM »
Local shoot yesterday drew 11 shooters and some good shooting done.

How many of us have ever shot that perfect 50 XXXXX?  Off hand at 25 yds on a 5 bull??   Precious few I'd wager.  Well I fired #1 = X fired #2 = X fired #3 = X fired #4
= X took my time and the old rifle was hanging fine squeezed off # 5 = 9 Ugh! That 9 was cutting into the 10 ring by a good 1/3 of the ball. Yes so near but too far! ::)

a 49 xxxx is fine shooting in my book but I bawled all the way home for pushing a 9 btw I got beat since another guy shot a 50x.  He said that was only the 2nd fifty he has fired in 7 yrs.  Course I gave him $#*! for waiting til yesterday! ;D

Oh yeah same guy and I tied at 50 yds offhand and I lost by widest shot!

We all have some such stories and thanks for letting me vent :-[ :-[

Roger,
Exactly what target are you shooting ? I've shot 50's on the small 6 bull but not 5 x's, but I have shot several 50 and 5x's on the slug and big bull at 25.

A 50-5X would have been a great score to land offhand, Roger.

It's tough, no doubt about it.  Best I've ever done offhand from 25 yards on an official NMLRA target was a 49-3X, and if I remember right the x's where sprinkled in.  I was just wanting to reach a score of 50, but it wasn't to be.

Best I've ever reached off the sticks from 50 yards was a 50-3X, which I felt pretty good about.  Then I shot a lowly 34 from 100 yards off the sticks...  I think I finished 7th or 8th that day.  No matter, I still got a 50 score and that was fun.  I have gotten to 50 a few times from 50 yards off the sticks, but never from offhand.

Shot a 48-3x at the territorial matches at owl hollow, stopped looking at the board after i was pushed down past 5th place. Many years ago when the eyes were still good!

Good shooting Roger - too bad about the '9'.  It happens - but - At least it was a "9".

Three years ago, at Hefley, I'd borrowed my old 14 bore back from it's new owner and used it for the 'paper' shoot.  My 75 yard Buffalo target had 2-9's and 2-10's, all in a 2" group and one in the foot - 2" off the scoring rings, for a 38/50 -  dang my hide 'ani-ways'. The best target turned in was a 42/50 with all 5 shots scoring, of course.  Even a 5 for my 'lost shot' would have beat that - and I threw down a big fat "0".

This is a 25 yard target shot with a cap-gun and was the first target I shot with that old deep grooved Bauska barrel - a .45 with a .448" bore and .028" rifling. I used a .457" ball with a .022" denim patch, spit lubed - loaded with a short starter and 3/8" hickory rifle rod. it was a good shooting barrel as long as the ball was big enough.  The target's old, but it looks like it's a 4X as well - same as yours.  The X is an inch in diameter, I think, so it's not particularly good, but not too shabby.

It's a 5 bull used here in Penna white X ring 9/16th and black 10 ring a hair shy of 1 1/2 in.   I'll post the shot target when my computer savy 'helper' gets back from Can Cun (Unless I thru the target out of the truck on way home) ::) ;D

Reminds me strongly of my wife's shooting while we were dating - and with my M29 no less - so I married her - I know she's always got my 6.
