Looks good other than you putting the lock on the wrong side

This is a 20 bore colerain barrel with an L&R lock. On this piece I forged the standing breech and made the thimbles, trigger, trigger plate and keys.

He also pretty much reworked that lock including forging correct spring and made the sideplate. Super job. You're on the fast track.!

J zoooo! About the only thing I would change is to lower the forearm sides to the level in the fourth pic showing the side plate. Hate to see what #4 will be like. Very nice work.

I like it. You even put the lock on the correct side. The engraving and carving are well done. The only thing wrong is that ramrod needs some soot on it.

I saw this fowler at the CLA show, and as is often the case, it looks even better in person. Phillip is a very talented young man with a very bright future in this gun building endeavor. Great looking piece, Phillip, and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

This front sight is brass.

I like this fowling piece a lot. I don't care about the lock-sidedness. The architecture and fit and finish are excellent. I'll bet it's a dandy shooter...has all the right curves.

There seems to be some questions about the lock. As with any lock there are things that can be done to help improve function keeping in mind what a great value these locks that we have available to us are.

This is the L&R lock and while some things were done to help with the over all function some cosmetic changes were made with the frizzen. To start with the mass of metal that fits into the pan was taken off because I don't know of an original English lock with that, the frizzen was either flat on the bottom or recessed. Some metal was taken off the top of the frizzen to flatten out the arm from the pivot and the top of the pan cover just as a personal preference. The bottom of the pan and around the bridle was thinned down as well to create a look that I was seeing on some original locks of the mid 18th century. Finally I chiseled a border around the lock plate and cock as opposed to a nick and dot border partially because unlike Chambers English locks this lock only comes without a border.
