Soon to be first timer from Central NY
« on: September 01, 2016, 02:55:07 AM »
My name is Doug Clarke, and I am from Central NY.
I have been lurking off and on for a few years trying to absorb as much information and knowledge as possible. I have enjoyed seeing the works of art that are created, as well as hearing your stories, reading your questions, and learning from the responses.
I have been interested in longrifles since I was a young boy and I have been considering building one for some time.
Today I took the plunge and ordered a Jim Chambers Isaac Haines .50 kit, as well as his kit assembly DVD and Ron Ehlert's kit assembly DVD.
I believe that I placed the order with Jim's wife. She was very helpful and quite funny!
I already have "The Gunsmith of Grenville County" and "The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle"
I am going to need plenty of help and advice so please be prepared!
If anyone on here is from Central NY as well and is willing to be of assistance I would be forever grateful.
I have some wood working experience and very little metal work experience.
I am a High School teacher and Football Coach so my actual build won't begin until I receive the kit AND after our season.
Thank you much for reading and also thanks in advance for any future help you may provide

Welcome to you and good luck with your build. You picked a good kit to start with as the parts set is very high quality. This forum is a good place to check out every day and to ask questions. There are no dumb questions so don't feel as though you are are asking trivual (sp) or silly questions.  Good luck on your build and the upcoming football season.

Welcome out of the shadows.

You've selected a kit that can give you a very fine rifle with patience and care.

Best of luck and enjoy!

Great choices.  I just bought a set of Chambers parts, good quality and friendly service.  I just finished the Turpin video from them, it made it look like an afternoon's work!

I won't be starting until sometime in winter, so I'll be watching your progress - post lots of pics!

Welcome to the forum, Doug.  Never hesitate to ask any question, as most here have probably had the same problem or puzzlement, and will be glad to help.  I have never built a Chambers rifle kit, but have used his locks, and have built his lock kits.  They are top-notch, and hard to beat.  Since this is your first one though, just relax and go slow and you will make a fine rifle.  And I will reiterate... Never hesitate to ask any question.  Good luck on the build, and welcome to the forum.  :)

Welcome to the forum Doug. I can tell you've done some Reading and a lot of research from your choice of kits. Jim sells quality kits and when you're finished building you'll have something that you can be proud of and that will give you years of enjoyment. Take your time and have fun with the process.

Start here, and watch all the updates. Mike does it a little differently than I do but there is plenty of good info on the segments.

Glad to have you here, Doug.  The hardest lesson I had to learn was not to charge ahead with the build.  I had to make myself stop, think, read, or otherwise gather info before going ahead.

Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome.
I am really looking forward to this build.

Jamie, I won't be starting until November at the earliest, so maybe we will be posting at the same time.

I plan on really going slow and taking my time.
I have been researching this for a couple of years, read A LOT of posts, on this site and others. Never read anything but good reviews on Jim Chambers. I even stalked some of his posts and found no reason not to, and every reason to purchase from him.
I think a lot of the fun has been the research, and the information on this site is so very good. It is a place I have been stopping at daily and the last few months multiple times daily.
I have some DVDs on the way I can't wait to find time to watch, been on YouTube watching some of the builds on there, and reading anything that I can find on the topic.

Thank you all again

We aren't that far apart. I am in Cortlandabout 10 minutes off I-81. I'm working a John Bonewitz from a plank at the moment. Give me a call when you have some free time to chat or visit. Jim and Karen have a first rate business. I have enjoyed doing business with them for some years now. You can't go wrong with one of their kits.

Thank you for the offer!
I may just do that once the football season is over
I would love to get your perspective on some things
