Pecatonica River LR Supply Mountaineer Repast
« on: September 12, 2016, 09:30:25 PM »
I have seen one topic on a Indian Blanket Gun, and several discussions on the idea of a canoe gun but no mention of one of these stocks.  Has anyone had any experience with one of these?

I ask because i was thinking of maybe trying one of these to build before attempting my true project some time next year; to gain a little experience with out spending a ton of money.

Does that sound like a decent learning idea?

I have pretty much settled on .62 cal for my rifle, thanks to all the input from folks here.  So i was thinking of doing one of these in in a smooth bore .62, so i could use the same ball but with different patches ( I am guessing here, as i am really new to BP.)  Or load shot in it if the desire suited me.  Basically giving me either a second .62 shot fast if the need should arrive or a short fast handling "shotgun" as a back up.

Wouldn't be built to the level as my rifle will be, off the shelf parts, etc

Good idea, bad idea

thanks for your input

While they are a novelty for reenactors, I think you would be better served in the long run with a Northwest Trade gun as your first project.  They are simple but usable.

I agree.  You can compete and hunt with a NW gun, but you can't really do much with a "blanket gun".  The difference in construction is really just length, and you might as well make something useful if you are going to go to the trouble of building.

What he said, plus they are easy to put together for first timers too.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I will also agree with the previous responders. By all mean build a trade gun in 36 or 42 inches. They are a fun learning project. One point I will advise you to consider is this. If you get a kit have Pecatonica leave the lock area not pre-inlet. And get the walnut stock.

As an aside. The Chambers English round face or early Ketland would be a very correct locks to use.

I have built and shot two trade guns with thirty inch barrels, and in my opinion they are the best handling of them all. I used mine for hunting, and recreational shooting, and had no bad experiences. I think shorter that thirty inches would be problematic for hunting or recreational shooting, and frankly dangerous. It would very easy to get yourself bent over the muzzle of a short gun like that while loading, and the shorter the barrel the harder it becomes to safely control the muzzle.

Build the blanket gun , they are a lot of fun to shoot , easy to build ,light weight and easy to carry . You can take grouse and other small game with it while you are camping or treking . Besides they are always a great conversation starter whenever you bring it out.

I believe that blanket guns, canoe guns, blunderbusses, and sawed off double guns, are all one hit wonders that are not at all versital, and don't do much of anything really well. They are a great project if you just have money to waste on guns that serve little purpose, other than getting pilgrims to say oh wow. JMO. My 30" barreled trade guns loaded easily in my canoe, and performed as well as most longer trade guns, and fowlers.
