Rifleman's knife
« on: October 06, 2016, 01:56:43 PM »
A little over a year ago you all may remember that Lonehunter and I did a trade and I received one of his great Rifleman's knives in the deal. At the time I told everyone that I would do some scratching on it when I worked up the nerve. Well $#*! must have froze over because I finally got it done. Nothing to fancy but I think it says everything it needs to. I hope you all like it and as always all critique is welcome. I really would like whatever input you all can give as I have a ton of respect for the real artists that frequent this forum

That is really classy IMO. What is the handle material?

It is bone Mike and it is some tough stuff to scrim on. Actually its not so much the scratching that's tough, it more about getting the ink in the right places because of the bones porosity.

That looks great. Did you make the sheath too?

Ron,That is a very nice engraving.
I understand that folks who engrave bone will apply wax to fill the pores before cutting and inking.

That is one classy unit. I like it in all respects. What was the blade made of?

Ron,

Very nice knife and some 'purdy good scratchin' too!

Blade and handle length please?

Cheers,

Well, the blade is 8 1/2 " and the handle is just a hair under 4 3/4", overall 13 1/4" . I am not sure what steel James uses but it has got and holds one heck of an edge. I do make sheaths but this one came with the knife. Rick, I tried something a little different on this one. I penciled in my layout and then sprayed it with hairspray. After doing my engraving I only had a few places where the ink was a problem. I'm not sure how it would work with the wax and my drawing but I will probably give it a try.
thank you all for the kind words.

You can seal bone with super glue too. The ink won't go where you don't want it to and you can sand it off when you're done with your scratching.

Now that sounds like an idea I could use. Do you lose very much detail or ,better question, do you have to sand very heavily?
That's why I like posting on this forum, now I have two ideas to try on my next project.
