Southern mountain patchbox release?

The kind that sit proud.  At the rear of an oblong steel patchbox.  There is no release pin in the toe or comb.  You appear to push on the latch. 

How is it spring loaded?  I can think of several ways but would prefer to do it the traditonal way.   Anyone have pictures or drawings of how it was actually done?

I am going to make and add such a steel patch box to a Kibler kit.

Ken Guy did a good one in the tutorials on a banana style box spring and nail catch for tennessee rifle

Go to the tutorials section under gun making- metal section- Go to the 2nd page and scroll to near the bottom under banana patch box spring and release by Ken G. These are not the exact listing but are close enough to get you there! Used this section recently and worked good for me!

Hi Scota;

I have made three banana box releases using Ken's tutorial, two using the 10d, 3" masonry nail and one using a repurposed hack saw blade with a button soldered on the top of it. I liked the hack saw blade release more than the nail. The reason is using the blade is faster and it works fine. "Easier," but not easy, if you don't go about it with some thought and planning. PM me if you want to discuss how I went about making mine. Also, if you decide to go the masonry nail route I have a supply and would be happy to send you several.

I put a patch box on my Kibler SMR http://www.jimkibler.net/kit-gun-gallery.html that closely resembles, in both size and shape, the one shown in William Ivey's book on which Jim based his kit.  While I cut and filed the toe plate from a piece of sheet steel, I bought the patch box from Muzzleloader Builders' Supply.  For what it's worth, it's item 11180 in their catalog and comes with the lid catch and lid lift spring.

I think I'll use the Daisey-Soddy, L-shaped version.  Just making flexible nail and driving it in is way too easy.
