Patchbox Hinge - Straight or Curved with the stock.
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:29:16 PM »
I know there are many styles, but what are the "standards" on the patchbox as it pertains to the hinge?  - Is the hinge straight and not following the curve of the stock(making a "flat" part on the patchbox), or do you curve it to match the curve of the stock, making a "non" straight hinge and Pin? I have seen both, mostly in photographs where it's difficult to tell, but didn't know if curving the hinge too much would make it bind. I know if the hinge pin is curved too much, the lid will bind while opening.

Just looking for any basic thoughts on a "flat" patch box hinge area vs a "Curved" one...

Thanks, Jon

I've made my patch boxes both ways too, but I prefer a box that conforms closely to the curve of the stock.

I wonder if you could help with the lid binding by filing just a tinny bit off the inside of the knuckles before you bend the box to conform to the stock.

That's how it's done.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

If you bend both pieces to conform to the stock before cutting the knuckles then you can cut the knuckles straight and there will be no binding when you open the lid.

I always bend the hinge using a hard maple form before I cut the knuckles.  It is not bent all that much.  I then cut the knuckles straight.   I prebend the pin and work it in making little changes in the bend as I go.   The secret (IMHO) to a tight hinge is a tight pin.   You have to worry the hinge open wearing away a bit of metal on the inside of the knuckles.   It will only open part way.   I do it that way because that is how I was taught to make them.
