Militiamans horn....aka my first horn
« on: January 15, 2017, 08:10:05 PM »
Well here is my first horn, with all the warts for the world to see.  I made this to go along with my New England fowler I will be starting soon.  I studied horns from New England from the 1760-1775 time period.  I added items that seem to be common on these horns i.e. identity, animals, sayings, religious portrayals.  The neck was done with a small mill file and a small round file.  I scraped the body and did the scrimshaw with a small knife. I did a wash in ferric nitrate crystals, then heated.  It aged it slightly, which is all I was looking for. I was trying to stay in the midframe of a militiaman who might have made this himself in camp or at home after the work was done for the day.  Comments and critiques are welcomed.
Greg

Nice work. The staple looks a little large but that maybe me. What is it made of? Your carving looks great.

Greg,
That is a great horn!
You said that yours was not as good as mine was when you posted about my horn....
I beg to differ Sir!
That is a great job on that horn in my opinion.
I like that you were going for the militiaman who would had made it himself. I was thinking the same thing as I did mine "sitting around the camp at the fire at night passing time carving on the horn".

Good work!

Man, I'm overwhelmed with the compliments! You are all too kind.  I agree the staple is a little big, didn't look big when it was in my hand!  Just a scrap piece of metal, don't know what it originally was. Conquer or Die was a from a diary of a soldier that fought during the first Battle of Saratoga. Its always stuck with me, so I thought it was fitting to go on my first horn. Yes. Its my username on ALR as well. I had a hard time with any curvy line. A couple skipped across the surface, which I them had to scrape and redo. One landed me a nice slice across my thumb (now I see why in Sibleys book they wear a leather glove).
I enjoyed the project, and would like to improve my scrimshaw on the next. Gotta build my fowler first. That should only take me three years!

Be it a phrase, a motto, or a nickname, I happen to like the folk spelling of "conquer or die".
(As my stylus doesn't have 'spellcheck', it looks as though could have spelt it me self!)   ;D

Cheers,

This horn shows a good eye for historic style engraving. Good work.

Well I don't want to give away the ending, but my next horn will have that colonial hunter sporting a brand new antler handled knife in his belt ;D ;D ;D
Thank you again for the positive comments.

I really like it. Your engraving is appropriate and not overdone.  I do find the size of the strap staple distracting, but that is a preference.

Thanks again for the positive feedback. I will try my hand at another horn in the future. Right now I'm focusing on a lock and furniture for the fowler this horn will go with.  I'm proud that what I envisioned in my head for this horn is actually what everyone sees. That rarely happens for me ;D
