poured pewter nosecaps
« on: January 10, 2017, 02:32:15 PM »
In his dvd "Building a  Kentucky Rifle", in the section on pouring a chevron muzzle cap, Hershel House says he's seen several original rifles with poured pewter end caps, that may date from the last decade of the 18th century to the first couple decades of the 19th century. Are any of these shown in published books or articles or in public collections to view?
Thanks

Gary Nobel's four volume set of reference books on Southern Mountain rifles has a bunch of photographs.  Also, the gun library on this forum has some as well.  Two original rifles I own (one by Joel Atkinson and one by William Douglas) are in the library and have examples of poured nose caps.  I am sure others are in the file as well, but can't say for sure.  Nobel's books are great when looking at the design characteristics the original makers used back in the day.
