Beautiful lock.

Question for you Lock Mechanical types - what is the purpose of that cover thingy on the sear spring screw?

What is the switch to the rear of the cock??

I haven't studied a ton...I don't remember seeing that on a lock before though...Only thing I can think is some sort of safety switch??

It is definitely a safety 'switch'.  It moves laterally to engage a slot in the tumbler or in some cases a pin into the base of the frizzen.  There is a notch in the 'cover thingy' which is a spring, to make the device positive and crisp.

HI,
If you click on the link below you'll view a thread discussing those sliding safeties and if you scroll down you will see some photos showing the mechanism uncovered.

Jacob Kunz had one on the rifle displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. 'thingy' went into the face of the frizzen.
