Dovetail lugs vs staples?
«

I've been doing some reading, watching videos etc.
I understand most longrifles had a pinned barrel not held by a key.
I see some guys use a dovetail and a lug and some use a staple and drilled holes.
Is one more period correct than the other?
Any reasons to go one way or the other??
Thanx!

I believe both methods are period correct, those in the know can tell you if one school over another was more likely to use one of them. I've used both methods but prefer dovetailing, to easy to drill too deep for staking.

Most of the original guns I have seen with the barrel out were dovetailed. The only exception was a upper Susquehanna rifle by Joe Long. Some of the round barrels were dovetailed also. The rest of the round barrels I have seen off the stock, the lugs were speltered. (Soldered) BJH
