Green Mountain Barrels?
« on: January 31, 2017, 08:05:37 PM »
Hi Folks,

I am looking for a GM swamped 42" barrel in .50 cal with flat bottom rifling.

In fact, I think this is the ONLY swamped barrel they make.

Here's the issue: I can't seem to find one in stock.

I am guessing they just make a batch every now and then?

Anyone know the whereabouts of one?

Many thanks, Marc

That could be a tough one.  As far as I know they haven't made any swamped barrels in close to a decade.  They don't list them on their website anymore either.  I hope I am wrong, because it would be nice to see them again.  Best of luck in your search.

I got one from Tip Curtis several months ago. IIRC he had more on hand.

I know this rumor has been around forever but I wonder if anyone has the real dope. I keep hearing that Green Mountain has stopped making black powder barrels due to government contracts, supposedly to make M2 .50 cal barrels. Other people have said that is nonsense and that they are still able to get them if you order enough. Does anybody have any solid information on this?

They are making straight octagon barrels.  There was a stretch of time a few years ago when delivery was very slow on these, but they have always been making them.  The issue is with the swamped barrels.  Unless there is a particular dealer, such as Tip Curtis as was already mentioned, that might be having swamped barrels made on special order I don't think GM is making these anymore as a standard product.

If someone is looking for one of these, it sounds like Tip would be the one to go to for answers.  Hopefully they will post what they find out.

Yes Tiswell, you are right.  Tip does have some, though I have no idea how many.  I ordered one, and thank you for the steer.  Keep in mind that Tip only does mail order.  Call first, then you mail a money order.  Best wishes,  Marc

Macgruger,
Glad that it worked out. I have never been to his place, but my perception is that he carves more styles and has more gun making stuff in stock then these places that put out catalogs.

It is fun to go to his place, it is just north of Nashville Tenn.. He no longer has a retail store per se with regular hours, but if you call first he will show you around. He does have a ton of stuff and knows a lot of ins and outs of what is and what isn't available.

This is pretty much correct. FWIW I have a dealer account with them and they are a major, maybe the largest barrel manufacturer as far as tooling goes in the US.  They supply most of the current commercial firearms manufacturers as well as military contracts. The blackpowder, pistol and reproduction barrels for older centerfires, machineguns etc. has always been a "side bet"  to fill some down time on their machinery. They will quote a special order but I don't know the mininmum.

I was at Tip Curtis place 3 years ago. He told me he buys 100 or more barrels at a time from GM and because of that they make barrels for him. He also has 150 different gun stocks styles in stock. All percaved....  Al
