Source for practice wood
« on: February 07, 2017, 11:47:42 PM »
I understand the fact and reasoning on why one should practice on wood which is the same as you will be working with.

Does anyone have a source for "scrape" pieces of curly sugar maple??

I'd imagine 5x5 or 6x6 stuff would work fine?

I haven't attempted to find anything local.  I don't know of any"specialty" lumber yards or anything?

I'd like to practice inletting and carving.  Gathering some new tools and such as well....Figured before I start another rifle I should work on my skills.

Didn't know if anyone knew of any wood sources.  I found some online that aren't crazy priced.  Found a 36x6x1 that'd run me about $30. The curl looks like a grade 4 or so..Nice curl through the piece so it'd be similar to a gun stock..Maybe cheaper options..Or better deals...?

I would contact local Cabinet makers to inquire about scrap hardwoods.  Many deal with similar woods ie; maple, walnut, cherry etc.

Some will charge some will allow you take some without.  Just a thought.

Contact Dunlaps and tell them what you are doing.  Years ago they would sell you discards for $25 apiece and bundle them together in lots of 5 because they could ship that amount as cheaply as one.  Mixed pieces that had large inclusions and other flaws that rendered them unfit for building a complete gun.

Most sawmills, at least in my area of northern Pennsylvania, sell curly maple boards.  I recently saw some very fancy stuff selling for $11 a board foot.  For comparison purposes, your 36"X6"X1" board is 1.5 board feet, so it would cost you $16.50 from this guy.  I've seen it sell for less than that as well.  I have some in my barn that I'd sell someone local for those prices, but I have no real interest in shipping individual pieces.  I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding it if you look at any larger sawmill.

Call Pecatonia River Long Rifle Supply, (815) 968-1995, http://www.longrifles-pr.com/

At their booth in Friendship they always have a box full of curly maple slats, cutoffs from stocks, about 30-36" long, 2-3" wide and 1/2-3/4" thick, for a buck a piece.  I'm sure they would mail you some for a nominal fee.  Nice folks to trade with.

Thanx guys!

I do live in Pennsylvania...I'd imagine if I looked I could find something useful.    I travel a good bit of the western part of the state regularly.

Only reason I liked that board was the fact it was pretty similar to gun stock wood. After working on one stock I know how the curl and figure can present its own challenges. The board itself was $15...The other half was shipping.  If he'd cut it into 6" pieces it'd be much cheaper I'd imagine.

Like was said, Dunlap or one of the other wood suppliers may do something like that and I'd get what I need.

I think someone sells butt stock sections for practice. Maybe someone can chime in with exact info.

That's what I was thinking of and couldn't remember who sold it.

Buy a nice blank to use in your next build. Rough cut it to shape with a band saw and you should have plenty of scraps to practice on.
