Touchy question for pro builders
« on: February 10, 2017, 12:36:12 AM »
I've been looking at different sorts of gun related small businesses for some time and many of them require registration through DDTC and ITAR regulations. Comes with a $2700 annual fee. Have any of our folks been bothered with this? I know there was a big decision about whether we were required to hold an FFL many years back but these things go back and forth with the political winds. I was told that even casting pistol bullets required this registration.

Nothing related to muzzle loaders (legally considered an "antique" under the Gun Control Act) requires an FFL or any other licensing or registration.  That covers most everybody here.    Anything else requires an FFL.   I turn down work all the time because it would require an FFL.   In fact, I am getting a legal opinion right now as to whether I can even photograph modern firearms without an FFL.   It is not as clear cut a situation as you might think.

This sort of issue came up back in the late 70s -early 80s. BATF was trying to force anyone building muzzleloader to get an FFL and be classified as a manufacturer. The whole thing kind of blew up in their faces and the issue went away.

This topic is delving into gun control issues and those discussions are not allowed here on ALR. I do think it may be of some help to builders so having edited a political statement out I will leave the rest but am locking the topic from further discussion.
