BC Artist RIP
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:34:19 AM »

Above is a rifle built by a great artist who is no longer with us.  Les Hanson passed away and had built this rifle for his daughter, but never got to finish it.  All that was left was to remove a square lump of wood from the lower forestock, and finish the rifle.  He did all the carving and engraving.  His family asked me to finish the rifle, and here is the result.
It is a .40 cal. squirrel rifle of contemporary design, using Chamber's lock and Rice 42" swamped barrel.  The barrel is signed in his hand, 'Les Hanson'.  He's much missed.

Here's some more...

Beautiful.  I am both sorry he had died, and pleased that you could finish it for him.  It is a beautiful rifle.

Now that is one handsome rifle.  It is very apparent that Les was an extremely talented man.   You did a great service Taylor!

Thanks guys.  I'd like to say something about the finishing on this rifle.  I bought some tannic acid 'on-line'.  It is a powder and came from China, of all places.  I dissolved a heaping tbsp in a pint of hot water, and applied it to the wood after whiskering thoroughly.  There was no apparrent change in the colour of the wood, apart from being wet.  When it had dried, I applied ferric nitrate solution, and the stock went instantly black!  There were lighter areas of dark grey, but for the most part it was black.  When that dried, I burnished the wood with a green ScotchBrite pad, and then 0000 steel wool.  Then I blushed it and this is the result.  The tannic acid made the curl pop.  I applied seven thin coats of Tung Oil 24 hours apart, and that was it.  The barrel, tang, and rear sight are browned.

Taylor, when you say blushed, i assume you mean adding some heat? Between you and your friend, that rifle couldn't be any more beautiful. Sorry for the loss. Mikeh

That IS one fine rifle. The loss of friends is part of life and ALL of the ones I had as
a youngster are now gone. None of them had this level of talent or skill but they
were good people and I still miss them.
