" Pin " size/diameter
« on: February 21, 2017, 02:06:51 AM »
Just wondered if the pin size of the 18th C ALR 's were on average,  larger than what we commonly use today [ i.e. 1/16th in ]   Those that I have seen appeared to be in the just under 1/8 "  to 3 /32nd " range, or is this my imagination , or are they probable replacements ??

I just took a 1760s period smoothbore apart and the barrel pins were slightly smaller than 3/32" and the pipes were held with thinner (about 1/16") close to the size I use.
I typically use #2 finish nails with a #49 drill bit and 3/32" brazing rod for pins on larger barrels.

The pins I use or cut are 1/16" dia.  This gives them a fairly "roomy" fit in the lugs.  It also means I don't have to open the lug holes all a that much.
