Another horn of intrest
« on: April 09, 2009, 08:04:39 AM »
This horn might be of intrest esp. to our Canadian members who live in B.C.  I was commissioned to do this horn in 1998  for a Swiss fellow who has a cabin at Heffley Cr. B.C. He wanted a "map" horn of the area around where his cabin is.It took me about 300 hrs. to make and scrim the horn . The Latin words beneath the crest loosely translated mean"gun nut".  The butt plug is relief carved from European walnut as is the spout plug. The scrim was done with only a stylus and an exacto knife. The color is India ink and painter's oil from Grumbacher.       Hugh Toenjes

Great looking horn, but the red on the white background is outstanding.

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments!   As to the "red" shield it is not a "painted" solid color but rather a solid color that has been "scrimed" with millions upon millions of tiny dots and cuts made with a stylus and exacto knife then filed with "Grumbacher" artist's oil and a little dryer. Then I sealed the color with a very small amount of stock oil finish.  That way it gives the appearance of a solid color.                   Hugh Toenjes

Hugh,
Did you do anything to the horn to get it so white?  It really helps highlight the scrim, especially the red.

bigsky--- The only thing that I did to the horn before I carved and scrimed it was to scrape, sand and polish it on a buffing wheel using a buffing compound made for polishing plastic. The white color is integral to the horn. ;)     Hugh Toenjes
