Brass vs Steel pistol barrels
« on: March 08, 2017, 06:50:42 AM »
I was looking tonight at a beautiful brass-barrel pistol in the classifieds here.
It got me to thinking about the pro/con's of a brass barrel.
I didn't get much from a cursory google search so I'm hoping some of the knowledgeable folks here can provide some wisdom.
Thanks in advance.

I was always curious about them too.  Interested to hear more about them.

I poured two brass pistol barrels this past weekend. I would gladly email someone some pictures if they wanted to post them.

I have owned "brass" barrelled guns in the past, and used them extensively. In reality, they were constructed of what is commonly known as naval bronze. Not brass at all.  Brass embrittlement  over time would be a real concern for me if a true brass was used.

Mr. Brier- am I to understand that you cast "brass" barrels.  Can you post pictures of the process?

Woodsrunner, yes I did cast barrels using scrap naval "brass" from machining scrap that I produce and collect at work. I do not have a computer and do this thru my phone. I have tried several times to post pictures in the past but unfortunately my phone can not do it. I will gladly send what photos I have for someone to post if they are willing to post them and I can take step by step photos of my next cast if people would like to see them.
