I have not been able to hunt alot this yr but I did get to go this morning an here is the bird I got with my rebuilt Joe Schell 12 ga jug choked turkey gun. He gobbled really good from daylight till about 8 but of course he was on the wrong side of the creek an had lots of female company. Being he was the only game in town I just hung around hoping he would get without a hen on up in the morning. About 9:30 I made a call on the old lynch box an he cut it from about 75 yrds an on my side of the creek this time. I set the call down an got Achilles up on my knee cocked an locked an finally saw him in the thick woods I hunt at 25 yrds with his white head shinning. I put the sights on that light bulb an Achilles done his job. In all he gobbled about 50/60 times during the morning. He has a 9an1/2 inch beard an 1 inch spurs an though I didnt put him on scales he felt about 18 lbs.

That's a fine story! But it begs the question, how did your gun get the name Achilles?

Achilles was the gifted warrior/killer in ancient greece an when I finally found the load that I wanted to turkey hunt with I said to myself he will kill like Achilles. So he got his name.

Nice job. I saw 5 gobblers struttin' in a field the other day. What I thought were hens was a flock of 30 or so geese. I don't know if the geese were impressed or not but the gobblers were putting on a show for 'em.

It was an easy fix. I sent the barrel an lock to Joe Schell an had him restock an make it into a iron mounted smooth rifle.

Very nice bird and great looking flintlock. Congratulations. I have been trying to find a gobbler to harvest with my New England fowling piece but so far the gobblers are not announcing their presence in my area. Hope to make it down to lower Alabama next week to try again. Maybe they will be vocal then.

Great bird, wattie!  Achilles from the ancient Greeks?  ???  I thought the name came from behind the butt plate where there's a he..; never mind. ;D :o
