David Price Swivel breech rifle kit build-Update #19
« on: April 06, 2017, 11:48:04 PM »
A rainy day is a good time to get back into the shop.

In this update to the David Price swivel breech flintlock rifle kit build I'll start configuring the butt stock by shaping the lock and side plate panels and shaping the stock's wrist and comb.

I think I may go back and extend the wrist a little farther into the butt stock...any opinions?

Looking good, Mike - the wrist does look a mite short in that top picture.

This morning I checked the length of the wrist and comb on the swivel breech rifle against a couple of my conventional, single barrel flintlock rifles, and the lengths are pretty much identical.

I think the reason that the wrist on the S-B rifle appears shorter is because the back action lock extends a lot farther back into the wrist than a front action flintlock.

I think I’m going to extend the line of the wrist farther into the right side of the butt stock to give it an illusion of more length.

Because the length of the swivel breech wrist and comb are the same as they are on my Shawn Webster built Dickert rifle, I decided not to lengthen the wrist at the expense of shortening the comb. Instead I continued the line of the wrist a little deeper into the butt stock, which I hope will give the illusion of a longer wrist.
