Lancaster rifle just coming off the bench

This is a Issac Haines Lancaster built from Tennessee Valley Manufacturing parts. This rifle is just coming off the bench. This is a starter rifle for my client who is a shooter of modern guns that has gotten bit by the black powder bug. He wanted a good shooter and I think that this little rifle will do the job. It has a 42" light profile swamped barrel in 50 cal. the standard Haines butt plate, trigger guard and thimbles. Many of these casting that I have got from other vendors have been a little on the hard side for brass. The castings I got from Jack were cast from good soft yellow brass, a pleasure to work with and to file. Although this is a pretty plain rifle I think that the clean lines make for a nice looking gun.

Agreed, nice looking does not have to mean fancy. He will be a happy shooter.

I kind of like the "plainness" of it. I think the simplicity of it is part of the attraction. I'm sure if your client was after a good shooter, this will fill the bill.

I like it. In my eye that has always been the rifle of choice for the frontier, plain (except for a few incised lines) and functional. I'm sure it will be a shooter too.

I looked over the website but there wasn't much detail about the stocks. And I have a question about his precarved early lancaster, haines style stock. Does the stock have offset? Or onset in the case of lefthanders like myself.
The onset (I've been told that's what it's called on a LH stock) applied to this stock is plainly seen in the photo.

Nice job Bama. The butt plate engraving is spectacular. Love the color of the stain. What did you use to get that dark color?

Gumboman under my shop lighting the color looks very dark in these pictures but in reality is not that dark. I used Birchwood Casey Walnut stain as a base stain. Then went over the Walnut With AF and blushed. Then I used Jim Kibler's finish on top of that. I may try to take a picture outside to show the real color of this rifle. This does make for a dark color.

Shreckmeister I did scrape this stock which is red maple but the grain would not cooperate so I had to use sand paper to get it to smooth out some. I have found that red maple does not take scraping sometimes no mater how sharp the scraper and then I have had some that did beautifully.

Darkhorse I am not sure about the cast off or cast on but Jack has always worked with me on any special request like that so I would suggest that you give him a call and ask. I know that he will do as much of the inletting as you want done.  He will inlet the lock, triggers and butt plate and swamped barrels. I also think that he will do lefty's if requested.
